Kythnos

Kythnos: a hidden treasure of the Cyclades

Kythnos, or Thermia for the locals, is undoubtedly a beautiful Cycladic island, where every corner seems to be taken from a painting.

As soon as you get off the ship, the guest of Kythnos, looking at the port of Merichas, is enchanted by the landscape of picturesque white houses with blue shutters, an image that dominates most of the island.

Dryopida, the focal point of the island

In contrast to the coastal landscapes, moving towards the interior of the island, one comes across Dryopida, the Village, which is adorned with traditional houses with tiled roofs among picturesque narrow streets and alleys and small squares.

In the picturesque Dryopida, our guest can visit interesting places, such as our Folklore Museum and the stalactite-filled Katafyki Cave, where they will have the opportunity to learn a lot about their history. Also, the Church of Taxiarchis, Agios Nektarios and Agios Ioannis Prodromos, are just some of the dozens of churches on the island, which are located in the village and will reward you either with their excellent architecture or with the magnificent sunset views that some of them will offer you.

Its 99 crystal-clear beaches

Anyone who has already visited Kythnos at least once certainly knows that perhaps its greatest "charisma" is its 99 crystal-clear beaches.

The first is that of Kolona, famous and not without reason, since the image of the golden strip of sand that divides the sea in half is a trademark of the island, due to its rare beauty. Among the closest sandy beaches to the port, are those of

Episkopi and Apokrousi, which are the only two organized ones, up to Loutra, proceeding towards Chora, where one has the opportunity to feel the beneficial properties of the Thermal Baths. Passing Loutra, after you encounter the picturesque bay of Agia Irini and later Potamia and Agios Sostis, beaches that will leave you speechless with their natural beauty and proceeding towards Dryopida, several more beaches will await you, such as Naoussa, Kouri, Agios Stefanos and Kalo Livadi.

On the other hand, in the settlement of Panagia Kanala, the famous and miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary dominates, the natural landscape is adorned by the blue beaches of Antonides and Megali Ammos. Finally, some more inaccessible beaches, ideally accessible by boat, are those of Skylos and Gaidouromantra, which will compensate you with their natural beauty and will let you enjoy more privacy and quiet compared to the others.

A taste of Kythnos

Another reason why the island will be unforgettable is its cuisine, due to the special local, pure products, such as cheeses.

Thermiotiko cheese, which is produced here, is used for traditional recipes such as sweet Thermiotiko pies and the so-called "kolopia", as well as the spongy, fluffy traditional cheese croquettes that will make you want to return to Kythnos again.

Also, our thyme honey is famous for its quality and deliciousness and is the main ingredient for the traditional pastelia which you will find on the island, especially when a wedding takes place.

Finally, in addition to local meat and fresh pelagic fish that you will find in all the taverns and restaurants, you will have the opportunity to taste the wild capers that grow everywhere on the island, as well as handmade spoon sweets.

The sights of Kythnos

The most important attractions of Dryopida are the Katafyki Cave, which is the largest cave in the Cyclades, with a large part of it adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. It is definitely worth a visit during your stay on the island!

Also, the Folklore Museum will give you a taste of the lifestyle of the local Thermiotians through exhibits such as clothes, objects and tools of daily activities.

An ideal summer destination

The reason why the island of Kythnos is at the top of summer destinations is, among other things, the fact that its diversity offers wonderful holidays for all ages, starting from groups of young people to families with small children. Taverns among the alleys or by the sea, souvenir shops and more, but also nightlife for a relaxed drink or a night out until the early hours of the morning, make this earthly paradise ideal for those seeking rest and fun.

In addition to these, the paths formed between the settlements are suitable for hikes as short as the one that starts from Drypida and ends at Lefkes beach, which lasts less than an hour, but for the more daring hikers there are also enchanting longer routes, such as the one from our village to Panagia Kanala, which takes almost three hours.

Finally, if you visit Thermia in August, you will certainly remember our festivals in honor of the Virgin Mary, with the highlights being those of Panagia Kanala, Panagia Flambouriani and Kalo Livadi, where you will feel Thermia's hospitality to the fullest, tasting traditional recipes for both food and wine, as well as learning to dance from the locals, who are renowned for their endurance and talent in this particular dance.

Kythnos is not just an island for anyone who visits it, but an experience that will remain unforgettable and will make them return again.
